Job Description – Waking Night Officer for Safe Haven Parenting Assessment

Location: Kent
Salary: £13.40 per hour (dependent on qualifications and experience) 

Reports to:  Registered Manager 

Contract Type: Full-time, Including sleep in shifts, evenings and weekends.

 

Job Purpose 

The Waking Night Officer plays a crucial role in supporting vulnerable parents and 

their babies within a Parenting Assessment Unit. The role involves supporting and 

monitoring the safety and welfare of both parent and child during the evening shift. 

Here at Safe Haven we are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of 

children and their parents and expect all staff to adopt the same ethos of care. The 

waking night officer is expected to adhere to Safe Haven Health and Safety Policy 

and report all safeguarding concerns to Safe Haven Care Manager. Including Local 

Authority Emergency Duty Team if required the emergency services that may include 

the Police or Ambulance Services.  The post holder will work within a multi

disciplinary team, contributing to parenting assessments, safeguarding interventions, 

and tailored support plans that enable families to achieve positive outcomes. 


What is the role?  

The waking night staff member is there to ensure that parents and young children are 

safe and monitored through out the night.  You may be required to administer 

medication therefore you need to be fully aware of the relevant policies and 

procedures. 


Other Duties Include: 

  Supporting parents when needed during the night. 

  To supervise the building during the night and complete four inspections 

of the building including communal areas, all inspections to be logged in 
waking night shift log book.  
  To monitor the CCTV and respond to any incidents in accordance to Safe 

Havens policy and procedures.  
  Maintaining communication with management and the local authority as 

necessary during the night. 
  Maintaining records and logs. 

  Completing an information hand-over to day staff coming on duty. 

  Possibly contributing to misper paperwork.  

  To respond to fire alarms and follow the appropriate emergency procedures. 


Essential Requirements 

 A CRB Disclosure at Enhanced level will be required prior to any offer of 

employment. 

   Have experience of working in a residential setting.  

    Hold a NVQ level 3 in child care. 

  Be able to identify risks and respond appropriately.  

  Have good assessment and planning skills. 

  Have excellent communication skills as you will be required to liaise with 

other agencies, family members, colleagues and parents.   

  Have experience of completing daily record sheets and report writing to a 

good standard. 

  Be able to manage challenging and difficult / stressful situations calmly 

and assertively. 

  Have an understanding of issues and pressures affecting vulnerable 

parents for example Domestic Abuse, Mental Mealth, Substance Misuse 

or Nero diverse.  

  Be willing to undertake cleaning to ensure the home is kept clean and 

tidy during the night.  

  Be flexible and responsive to the unique needs of each parent and child. 

  Be willing to engage in supervision and training. 

  Have an understanding of equal opportunities and diversity. 

  You may be required to cover Bank Holidays, sickness, weekends at short 

notice.
